Is a German Shorthaired Pointer the right breed for me?
The German Shorthaired Pointer is a welcome addition to everyday family life. They are extremely loyal, affectionate, and a whole lot of fun! GSPs are generally great with kids, although care should be taken because Shorthairs can be boisterous, especially when young. A Shorthair is a whirlwind of athletic energy and needs plenty of vigorous activity. This need for exercise, coupled with the breed’s natural instinct for prey, means training is an absolute must. These dogs love interaction with humans and appreciate active families who will give them a regular outlet for their energy. Due to a GSPs hunting instincts and prey drive, many may not be amicable towards cats and other small house pets.
A GSP is generally easily trained, as they are a very intelligent breed. Whatever a Shorthair does is done with enthusiasm, energy, devotion, and good humor. By nature, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a close working, multi-purpose hunting dog. The Shorthair is an upland hunter used for finding and pointing birds, but the breed also trails furred game and retrieves out of water. From its origins in the 19th century, the Shorthair has been used for hunting, obedience and agility competition, bomb and drug detection, and as therapy dogs and assistants to the handicapped.
The Shorthair is considered a medium sized hunting breed, with males ranging from 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weighing 55 to 70 pounds. Females range from 21 to 23 inches and 45 to 60 pounds. The coat color can be a combination of liver and white, solid liver, liver and white ticked, patched, or roan. Black and white Shorthairs may be registered with AKC, but this coloration is unacceptable in the show ring.
