Adoptable Dogs

You must be an ISR approved adopter to request and receive further information on our GSPs. The process includes an application review, Veterinarian check, and home visit. Please understand there may be approved adopters already going through various stages of our adoption process; candidates who submitted their applications before those still in the review process, or those who are in the home visit stages.

Expressing an interest for a particular dog already in our rescue does not guarantee that specific dog will be available when you’ve completed the approval process. Also, we must ensure the needs of the dog of interest is a good match to an applicant’s specific circumstances. Completing an application and going through the approval process will add your information to our network. A current approval with your information in our database offers you the greatest opportunity to be matched up with the perfect GSP; a great match for your entire family. To start the application process, please follow the instructions found on this page.

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Atlas gets along with other dogs; unsure about cats.  A big yard with a family to keep him exercised and engaged.

ATLAS’ STORY:

Atlas is 2 years old and came to ISR as a stray. He’s been with his foster family for several weeks and is doing great. Atlas is a typical high energy Shorthair and would love an active playmate. Atlas knows sit and working on stay and come and walks nicely using a training collar. He is food motivated. Atlas has shown no food or toy aggression. He loves to chase a tennis ball and will pack a few for you to use.

Atlas is a gentle, affectionate boy with an adventurous spirit and a need for structured energy outlets. At about two years old and weighing 50 pounds, this athletic pup is happiest with a tennis ball in his mouth or alongside a companion on a walk. Atlas loves attention, whether it’s from humans or other dogs, and thrives when he has clear boundaries and focused activities to keep him engaged. He’s incredibly food-motivated, making training sessions a rewarding time for him and his family.

Atlas is learning several commands beyond “sit,” including “stay,” “come,” and “heel.” Though he’s still perfecting these skills, he takes pride in earning his rewards. He tends to pull on walks, so a training collar is recommended to help keep him focused. His curiosity extends to birds and deer, though he’s content to observe rather than chase. With a good training collar and an attentive handler, Atlas can enjoy exploring without being overly distracted. His good nose suggests he may excel in nose work or tracking, making him a potential candidate for families interested in such activities.

He’s generally calm and gentle around other dogs, and he has even enjoyed playful sessions with other Pointers. Though he hasn’t been tested with cats, Atlas has no food or toy aggression and demonstrates patience around his canine friends. While his history with children is unknown, he’s likely to do well with older kids who can understand his boundaries. However, given his enthusiasm for stairs and his tendency to jump up to greet people, supervision is needed around small children, especially as he learns to manage his excitement.

Atlas handles car rides well, though he occasionally needs a gentle reminder to stay in the back seat. He usually settles down after a bit and will lay quietly for the rest of the journey. He is calm for grooming, including nail trims and ear cleaning, making him an easygoing companion for basic care routines. Atlas is currently working on crate training—sometimes he’ll walk right in, and other times he needs a gentle nudge. A treat, though, always does the trick! Occasionally, he may let out a little cry, but a calm “quiet” usually helps him settle down. Once he’s relaxed, he does great in the crate.

Sarge – Fostered in Illinois

Sarge is an adorable energetic Shorthair can be placed with other larger (45lbs+) dogs as he loves to play. No cats.

Sarge is a 2 1/2 yr old male who is great with other bigger dogs. He weighs about 54 pounds.  He came to ISR from Iowa where he was rescued by Animal Control due to neglect.  He was adopted, but then returned because he was kept outside and spent his time digging in the yard out of boredom.  Sarge also didn’t get along with the chickens.

Sarge likes to watch everything (squirrels, birds, rabbits, etc.) that moves.  When out walking he’s good on the leash and won’t pull hard as he sneaks up the different critters.  While he doesn’t live with small children, Sarge has interacted with them.  He’s more comfortable with children over 10.  The foster family has taken him to a children’s gymnastics club and he’s done well when the kids have approached him and petted him.  He’s also done well  in public places with children.

Exercise is something Sarge enjoys as he likes to walk and run in a fenced yard.  Also, he attends daycare 3 days per week.  On the other days he goes on 2+ mile walks and does well.  Sarge also enjoys playing with puzzles, stuffed toys and fetch.

Sarge does have some separation anxiety as he wants to know where you are at all times.  He will scream in his crate if he’s alone and no other dogs are around.  If he’s crated with a sibling he does much better, but will still scream.  He will settle down eventually.

The foster family has seen inconsistent food aggression.  If they give him a bone and then try to take it away he would growl.  However, after telling him “no” he would drop the bone.

Sarge knows the following commands: sit, down, stay, shake and he will sit at doors.  His foster family is working on “off” to keep him off their counters.  They are also working on bring and drop it to play with a ball or similar.  He’s food motivated so he has tons lot of potential.

Smokey is a very friendly senior Shorthair who plays well with other dogs. Not sure about cats.

Smokey is an 11yr old male who came to ISR from an owner who had “no time for him.” He enjoys walks with good stamina, has a normal appetite, sleeps a lot as a senior deserves. Smokey is quiet but has a deep, serious bark when there is an unusual sound or smell. He is a great watch dog and can be left alone for several hours without mishap.

Smokey is good with older kids as he lived with them. We’re not sure about younger kids. He currently has a roommate who he loves to play with. He love to be outside and loves attention. As an older dog he has a few bumps, but he is in good health.
